OBJECTIVES

  1. Create a mobile pop-up shop that reflects the values and mission of this retailer.

  2. Design a unique retail space that yields a memorable shopping experience.

  3. Use reclaimed materials that minimize impact.

INSPIRATION

NuBe Green is a retailer that is focused on offering responsible and sustainable goods. At the root of this mission is a commitment to reused materials. Applying this idea to a physical retail space was the inspiration for this project.

 
 

DEVELOPMENT

This 24’ shipping container was sourced from a local yard in Seattle. It was important to find a container that had been ventilated to ensure interior air quality.

A range of experiential concepts (shown in these sketches) were explored early in the ideation phase. The final product was simplified in order to increase transportation efficiency and create a more versatile pop-up shop.

 
 

The shop can be transported by truck to any location. On-site, a gas-spring system opens the corrugated steel cladding to reveal glazed entrances on both sides.

Keeping with the retailer’s mission to encourage sustainable design and consumption, this pop-up shop uses reclaimed wood for the landings and the interior floor, as well as reclaimed street signs for the exterior signage.

 
 

RESULTS

  1. A resourced shipping container was converted to a retail space for selling goods made from reclaimed materials.

  2. This compact retail space stood out amongst it’s brick-and-mortar neighbors. For many shoppers, this was their first experience entering a shipping container. Its mobility allowed it to quickly set up in new locations, offering a delightful surprise for regular shoppers.

  3. The retired shipping container was sourced locally in Seattle. The landing and interior floors used reclaimed wood. The exterior signage was made from reclaimed street signs.
